Position: Youth Organizer

Founded in 1966, UPROSE is Brooklyn's oldest Latino community-based organization. In 1996 our mission shifted to organizing, advocacy and developing intergenerational indigenous leadership through activism. In reaching these goals, our primary efforts focus on sustainable development, and environmental and social justice. 


Position Summary:

We are seeking a Youth Organizer who will successfully engage youth into intergenerational leadership as a strong and central voice for UPROSE’s organizing efforts. Successful candidates will have a history of community building, be self-motivated and self-aware, with experience and skills in organizing, training, and writing.

The Youth Organizer will report to the Environmental Justice Organizer and Executive Director and work collaboratively to ensure success of organizational goals. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Coordinating UPROSE’s Youth Justice programs
  • Recruiting and training youth to become organizers for environmental justice and social justice campaigns
  • Assist in developing strategies for UPROSE’s environmental, climate and social justice programs, projects, and campaigns
  • Collaborating with partner organizations on local, citywide, and national level that serve youth and communities of color
  • Coordinating and conducting organizing efforts and events
  • Coordinating and developing training materials for  UPROSE’s  Youth Leadership Institute
  • Working with members to identify issues that are important to them.
  • Assistance in carrying out media strategies to raise awareness about issues and build support for all UPROSE’s organizing efforts.
  • Other community organizing and administrative responsibilities as necessary

 

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in Education or related field, 1-3 years experience in popular education and/or programs for urban youth and community organizing experience.  Applicant must have excellent management, interpersonal, and computer skills.
  • Personally connected to the issues that underserved communities face;
  • Committed to working in an intergenerational environment;
  • Highly skilled facilitator;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Skilled at planning, prioritizing, multi-tasking, organizing and following through while maintaining energy and focus.
  • Strong commitment to environmental justice, and social justice issues and UPROSE’s mission and organizing objectives
  • Knowledge of environmental and social justice issues affecting communities of color and low income communities
  • Ability to recruit, inspire, manage and mobilize youth to take effective action
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Spanish/English preferred
  • Must be willing to work 10-6PM some weekends and evenings

UPROSE Summer Internship

 UPROSE is seeking up to 3 individuals to join us for summer internships.

 

Internships will involve working with program staff in multiple capacities including: organizing, environmental & social justice education, advocacy and outreach, policy research,  fundraising and more. Candidate(s) should be prepared to take ownership of projects to which s/he is assigned and be accountable for deliverables.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team, think critically and a high level of flexibility are all requisite. This is a great opportunity for individuals who are interested in developing or have existing knowledge/skills in the following areas: environmental science, urban planning, GIS mapping, fundraising, website development, social networking, working with youth, public health, policy, education,
organizing, social and environmental justice history/movements.

UPROSE offers a small stipend for travel and food throughout the duration of the internship.  Preference will be given to applicants who speak Spanish, Arabic and/or Chinese in addition to English. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Internships and Volunteer Opportunties

  • Tutor young people ages 12-21

  • Teach basic Spanish to English dominant Latino youth

  • Help translate materials into Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic

  • Work as a legal intern, organizing intern, or urban planning intern

  • Help provide child care and translations at community meetings

Internships at UPROSE

 

UPROSE offers leadership training, mentoring and a comprehensive internship program for high school students, undergraduates, graduate, and law students. Our interns have developed educational literature, conducted workshops, testified at hearings, mapped brownfield sites and environmental burdens, research land use issues and helped us organize. Interns are provided with supervision and professional development opportunities.

Unless pursuant to a fellowship, grant or workstudy, internships at UPROSE are unpaid. We offer assistance in securing grants.
